Strategic Wargaming Model of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States with a Resilient Defense Supply Chain Approach

Abstract

This study aims to identify the strategic wargaming model of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States with an emphasis on the resilience of the defense supply chain. The research adopts a qualitative approach, employing thematic analysis to examine data derived from semi-structured interviews with six political and defense elites.
The analysis led to the extraction of three key dimensions: strategic planning, operational execution, and defense supply chain resilience. Within each dimension, major themes and core categories were identified, indicating that the successful design of a war game requires the integration of geopolitical foresight, multi-layered command, and robust support infrastructures.
The findings suggest that, in the complex regional environment, the Islamic Republic of Iran must move beyond traditional wargaming models to address U.S. hybrid threats, shifting toward multi-domain models based on simulation and scenario-based storytelling. Furthermore, reliance on centralized logistical infrastructures is considered a strategic vulnerability.
Finally, the study offers policy recommendations for strengthening Iran’s defensive capabilities. These proposals, grounded in localized models and informed by successful international experiences, outline pathways for enhancing deterrence and resilience of Iran’s defense supply chain in future war scenarios.
