During the medieval period, military instruments and warfare technologies played a pivotal role in determining the fate of states and empires. One of the most striking examples of this phenomenon is Timur’s astonishing victory over the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Ankara (1402 CE/804 AH), a conflict that not only led to the capture of Sultan Bayezid I but also temporarily halted Ottoman expansion into Europe. This victory, achieved against a seemingly organized, powerful, and well-equipped force like the Ottomans, has long intrigued historians. The central question of this research is: What role did Timur’s military instruments play in securing this historic victory at Ankara? Timur’s triumph was rooted in his strategic integration of classic and innovative military tools, combined with a network of operational tactics and military diplomacy. While many analyses have focused on the political weaknesses of the Ottomans, their internal discord, or Timur’s personal genius, few studies have specifically examined the diversity of Timur’s military forces, the specialized instruments he employed, and their tactical deployment on the battlefield. Using a descriptive-analytical methodology and relying on library resources, this study aims to demonstrate how the synergy of three key elements manpower, operational tactics, and diplomacy-enabled Timur to overcome the Ottoman Empire.
