In the Middle Ages, military tactics and warfare technologies played a decisive role in determining the fate of states and empires. One of the most striking examples of this phenomenon is Timur’s remarkable victory over the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Ankara (1402 CE / 804 AH), a confrontation that resulted in the capture of Sultan Bayezid I and temporarily halted Ottoman expansion into Europe. This victory, achieved against a highly organized, powerful, and well-equipped force such as the Ottomans, has long attracted the attention of historians. The central question of this study is: what role did Timur’s military tactics play in his historic victory at Ankara? By employing a sophisticated combination of classical and innovative military tactics, and by relying on an integrated network of operational strategies and military diplomacy, Timur was able to defeat Sultan Bayezid in the Battle of Ankara. While much of the existing scholarship has focused on Ottoman political weaknesses, internal divisions, or Timur’s personal genius, comparatively little attention has been devoted to a specialized analysis of the military tactics employed by Timur, the diversity of his combat forces, and the manner in which these tactics were applied on the battlefield. Using a descriptive-analytical methodology and drawing upon library-based sources, this study seeks to demonstrate how the synergy of three key elements—human resources, operational military tactics, and military diplomacy—enabled Timur to overcome the Ottoman Empire.
